Lanthanum : - A rare element that is using in the construction of a starship's Jump Drive grid.
Lanthanum Flash : - This refers to the flash of light that is emminated from a starship when it leaves jumpspace. The flash is caused by the energy in the jump grid disappating upon exit from jumpSpace. This can be hard to spot and is proportional to the amount of energy in the grid. Larger ships and longer jumps give out a larger flash.
Long Night : - Term used to refer to the period between the collapse of the Rule of Man and the formation of the Third Imperium. It was a period where worlds were cut off from one another, technology was lost and the population on many worlds simply failed to survive. The galaxy is only just emerging from this period which is commonly held to be from -1776 to 0 according to the Imperial calendar.
Low Berth : - A capsule capable of putting person in a state of suspended animantion until it is turned off. Commonly used by travellers travelling over large distances who cannot afford a stateroom. Also used to keep seriously injured persons alive until proper medical care can be reached.
The Imperial Navy makes use of low berths to keep a frozen watch.
